Mercury Filling Replacement
Why Replace Mercury Fillings?
Health Reasons:
We are happy to replace your old metal fillings with porcelain or tooth colored fillings if you are concerned about the effects of mercury on your overall health and wellbeing.
Cosmetic Reasons:
Traditional metal mercury is black or gray, becoming dark colored over-time, decreasing the brightness of your smile. With tooth-colored dental restoration materials, we can replace these metal fillings with natural looking restorations. Most people prefer the look of tooth-colored fillings over the unnatural appearance of metal fillings that were developed over a hundred years ago. |

| DISADVANTAGES OF METAL MERCURY FILLINGS: |
· require more healthy tooth to be removed.
· Create outwards pressure on the tooth, since they are tightly packed into the cavity rather than bonded to the tooth. This progressively weakens the tooth, eventually causing cracking, requiring a crown and/or root canal treatment.
· Continuously contract and expand with hot and cold in the mouth, which weaken the tooth. This happens the same way that mercury is used in thermometers, where it expands with higher temperatures and contracts with lower temperatures.
Porcelain or Plastic?
Both materials can be used as fillings, however we recommend porcelain Inlays or Onlays because they are stronger, more durable and look beautiful. Plastic is great for small fillings, but when used for large restorations it needs to be replaced more frequently. With constant replacement, it increases the chance of you needing root canal treatment and eventually the tooth will require a porcelain restoration anyways.
